Akron downs Ohio State, 2-0
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Freshman Nick Hinds (Plantation, Fla.) and Jonathan Lewis (Plantation, Fla.) each registered their first career goals to propel the University of Akron men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory past Ohio State (5-11-2) on Wednesday, Oct. 26.
"I thought we played very well," said Akron head men's soccer coach Jared Embick. "We really battled and probably had one of our more complete performances. But the challenge is to repeat the effort and build momentum, that is what we are looking to do on Saturday."
The Zips (8-5-1) registered a 15-8 advantage in shots, including 3-1 on frame, en route to extending their unbeaten streak versus the Buckeyes to 12. Hinds, Lewis and senior Adam Najem (Clifton, N.J.) each recorded a game-high four shots for Akron, while redshirt junior Sam Gainford (Liverpool, England) added two shots. Ohio State was directed by two shots from Tyler Kidwell.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Lundt (Berlin, Germany) netted one save to collect his eighth shutout of the season, while his counterpart, Parker Siegfried also posted one save.
Lewis scored what proved to be the game-winning tally at the 4:52 mark off an assist from Hinds. The goal was the first in the collegiate career for Lewis, who leads Akron in assists with six.
Hinds netted his initial collegiate tally in the 24th minute (23:08) to extend the Zips' advantage to 2-0. Garnering the assist on the score was senior Brad Ruhaak (Akron, Ohio).
Akron nearly extended its lead to 3-0 at the 44:35 mark as the Buckeyes were whistled for a foul in the box. The Zips though were unable to convert on the penalty kick and went into the intermission holding a 2-0 advantage after outshooting Ohio State, 7-3.
Neither side was able to record a shot on goal in the final stanza, despite Akron unleashing five shots that were blocked.
The Zips return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29, as Akron travels to Bowling Green, Ohio, for a key Mid-American Conference showdown against Bowling Green. The contest is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
