Akron Loses to Miami, 3-0
AKRON, Ohio –Three second-half goals sent visiting Miami past The University of Akron women's soccer team, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
Miami (8-7-0, 3-5-0) scored three times in the first 12 minutes after the break to take control of a match that was played evenly through the first 45 minutes. Senior Rachel Phillip and junior Kelly DeNiro each registered three shots in the match to lead Akron. Senior goalkeeper Jeny Wolbert made four saves.
The Akron (6-6-2, 3-3-2 Mid-American Conference) lose is the first against a MAC East division team in its last 12 games dating back to the 2008 season. The Zips had gone 10-0-1 during that time.
Miami got on the scoreboard just 30 seconds into the second period when Kayla Zakrewski scored from a tough angle after collecting a rebound. Emily Hyde fired the original shot that forced an excellent low save from Wolbert, who dove to her right to block away the attempt. Zakrewski was waiting on the doorstep, however, converting her seventh score of the season.
Phillip nearly equalized less than five minutes later when she beat the Miami backline to a long clearance from Kara Cooper at the top of the Miami penalty area. Phillip turned past one MU defender and rifled a rocket that rang Allison Norenberg's crossbar before being cleared away by the RedHawks.
The RedHawks doubled their lead in the 53rd minute when Kelsey Dinges's corner slipped through the hands of Wolbert and Hyde finished from close range.
Dinges was also involved in Miami's third and final goal when she fed Katy Dolesh in the 57th minute in the middle of the field. Dolesh turned and shot from 16 yards out past Wolbert's right side.
Wolbert's first-class save of Giselle Mangol's 23rd minute, close range blast kept Miami from grabbing the early lead. Mangol was played in on goal by Kelsey Dinges, but Wolbert parried her shot from 12 yards up into the air. Wolbert – who had done well to close the angle – then corralled the rebound before it skipped across the goal line.
Akron will look to regroup next weekend when they travel to rival Kent State on Friday and visit Buffalo on Sunday. Friday's kickoff in Kent is set for 4:00 p.m.
