Albany's First Half PK Sinks Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Despite outshooting and outplaying the Albany Great Danes in the second half, the Iona College women's soccer program dropped its first home game of the season, 1-0. Junior Mariah Williams scored the lone goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 16th minute.
Senior Tiffany Martinez recorded seven saves in the loss, five of which came in the first half. The Great Danes controlled the tempo in the first, outshooting the Gaels seven to five and keeping the Maroon & Gold without a single shot on net.
Williams and senior Vivian Vega each led Albany with three shots each; all of Williams's shots were on goal. The Great Danes made just three substitutes, one of which was freshman Bee Murphy who picked up a shot on net.
Sophomore Amber Crispin had the Gaels most dangerous chance in the firs the half on a free kick in the 19th minute. Following a foul just outside the box, Crispin took a shot at knotting the game but missed just inches above the crossbar.
Junior Mariana Jaramillo had a team-high five shots. Her lone shot on goal came in the 53rd minute. Sophomore Mariah Elsenheimer pushed freshman goaltender Andrea Leitner to the limit in the 74th minute. Elsenheimer drove down the right side, booted one with her right foot, and forced Leitner to leap and tip the threatening shot over the cross bar.
Iona outshout Albany 12-11, and had an edge in corner kicks taken, three to one.
The Gaels continue their six game homestretch on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 11:00 AM against the Binghamton Bearcats. The game can be watched live on ESPN3 and WatchESPN.
