Amber Crispin Named MAAC Player of the Week
EDISON, NJ - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced its weekly awards on Monday, Oct. 15. Junior forward Amber Crispin of Iona's women's soccer team has been named the MAAC Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
Last week the Gaels played just one game and came away with a 3-2 win against the Fairfield Stags. Crispin scored two goals for the Gaels in the opening three minutes, both of which were assisted by freshman midfielder Andrea Ferrer.
The first goal came 69 seconds into the match. Ferrer took a shot from 25 yards out that hit off the crossbar and Crispin was there to clean up the mess for her first of the game. Just moments later in the 3', the junior and freshman teamed up against down the right sideline. Ferrer took a pass from the midfield and pushed it down the right sideline to the streaking Crispin. There she took in the pass and got into a scoring position just inside the right box that allowed her to bury a line drive shot into the left netting.
Crispin finished the game with four shots, three shots on goal, two goals, and an assist. Her helper came on the game-winner in the 12'. Following a Stags goal that tweezed the momentum away from the Gaels, Crispin dribbled into the heart of the attacking area and drew multiple defenders. With all eyes on her, Crispin fed a pass to Ferrer who then covered a grounded pass into a goal to make the scoreboard read 3-1 in the Maroon & Gold's favor.
Crispin's two goals gives her five on the season. She is tied for the team lead with freshman Faith Preziosi. Both Crispin and Preziosi have 21 shots on the season. Each rank tied for eighth in the MAAC in goals scored. Crispin ranks ninth in the league with 12 points.
Iona's next game is against the Manhattan Jaspers on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at Mazzella Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm and the game is being broadcasted on ESPN+. Prior to the game, head coach John Stalzer and the program will honor its four seniors Mariana Jaramillo, Megan Wood, Corinne Burns and Sara Mangialardi as part of its annual senior day ceremonies.
