Anding Leads NU Past Holy Cross, 5-2
BROOKLINE, Mass. – Don Anding scored three goals and the Northeastern men's soccer team (5-1-1) overcame an early 1-0 deficit to knock off Holy Cross (2-6-0) on Tuesday night at Parsons Field, 5-2. Donovan Fayd'Herbe de Maudave and Terence Carter also scored for the Huskies, while Andre Ciliotta had two assists.
Northeastern's five goals are the most for the team since Nov. 3, 2002 against Binghamton. The Huskies outshot Holy Cross 13-9 for the match and generated seven corner kick opportunities to the Crusaders' two.
The Crusaders put the pressure on NU early in the first half as Tommy Uttaro put Holy Cross up in the eighth minute. Uttaro took a feed from Andrew Rhodes, and chipped a shot over NU goalkeeper Oliver Blum (one save) for his first goal of the season.
Uttaro's tally seemed to awaken the Huskies, who fired right back with three straight tallies in less than 20 minutes. The first came from Anding in the 15th minute when he received a pass from Ciliotta and sent a low shot past Crusader goalkeeper Kevin Wright.
Fayd'Herbe de Maudave capitalized on a loose ball two minutes later when he rifled a shot from the top of the box and into the right side of the net for his second goal of the season.
Northeastern, which outshot Holy Cross 8-2 in the opening 45 minutes, continued to dictate the pace of play, and Anding gave NU a two-goal cushion in the 33rd minute with a low shot through Wright off another dish from Ciliotta.
NU kept up its momentum into the second half as Anding picked up his third of the night on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute.
Carter then made it a 5-1 contest nine minutes later with a highlight reel goal for his second tally of the season. Carter controlled the ball above the box after taking a pass from Jonathan Eckford. Carter then lifted the ball over a Holy Cross defender, made a quick move to his left and fired a shot that beat Wright five-hole.
Holy Cross would make it a three-goal game in the match's final minutes on a goal from Monty Sanders that got past Jacob Aduama, who replaced Blum in the 77th minute.
Northeastern will be back in action on Saturday as the Huskies close out nonconference play at VCU at 7 p.m.
