Anding's Golden Goal Lifts NU Past Marist
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.J. – Don Anding's goal in the 106th minute sent the Northeastern men's soccer team (2-0-0) home with a 1-0 double overtime victory at Marist (0-2-0) on Tuesday night at Tenney Stadium.
Anding, who hit the post earlier in the match, found redemption when he picked up a loose ball off an Oliver Blum punt and threaded a shot low and through Red Fox goalkeeper Anthony Sokalski (three saves). Blum, who replaced starting goalkeeper Dylan Faber at halftime, made three key saves down the stretch to set the table for Anding's game-winner.
NU held a 13-7 (4-3 on goal) advantage in shots in the game, while corners were level at five apiece.
The Huskies controlled the pace of play during the opening half, outshooting Marist 7-3. NU got right to work in the opening minute as Laurence Braude fired a shot on goal, forcing Marist goalkeeper Anthony Sokalski to make a tough save.
Both teams created chances during their corners, including a shot from Andre Ciliotta in the 39th minute before Greg Davis sent a header wide minutes later during a Marist corner.
The defensive play increased with the start of the second half, with neither team willing to allow easy scoring opportunities on goal. Northeastern nearly cracked the deadlock with 23 minutes left in regulation as Anding blasted a shot off the post.
Chances continued late into the second half as NU was able to thwart a late corner from Matty Berman with 3:25 remaining. On the other end, Ambry Moss had a header blocked in the final minute to send the Huskies into overtime for the second straight match.
The Red Foxes dictated play early in the first minutes of extra time. Blum was tested right away in the first overtime as Emeka Nwachukwu drove a shot on goal before Faga sent a shot over the crossbar five minutes later.
Blum kept the Huskies in the game during the second overtime, stoning MJ Stellwag two minutes into the final stanza. Dante Marini and the Huskies created a chance of their own midway through overtime as he sent the ball into the box on a corner kick, but Nikko Lara's bid was denied by Sokalski before Anding ended it for the Huskies just 61 seconds later.
Northeastern returns home on Sunday to host crosstown rival Harvard at 2 p.m. on Parsons Field. The Athletic Department will be hosting a free barbeque for all students and their families, sponsored by Coca-Cola, Host Tea and Pop Chips. All NU student-athletes and coaches will also be on hand to interact with fans and, as always, admission to Huskies soccer matches is free of charge.
