Anghel Ties School Marks in Win
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Stephanie Skilton (Auckland, New Zealand) scored in the 62nd minute to give the Syracuse women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory against Colgate at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 1. The Orange improves to 3-1 this season, snapping the Raiders’ (3-1) three-game winning streak to start the season.
Senior goalkeeper Brittany Anghel (East Meadow, N.Y.) recorded her 20th shutout and 24th victory of her career. She is now tied for the school record in both categories. Eliza Bennett-Hattan posted 20 shutouts from 2006-09, while Katie Karlander recorded 24 victories from 1999-2000.
The first half featured back-and-forth action as both teams tried to find their rhythm. Syracuse outshot Colgate, 5-1, in the first 45 minutes, but couldn’t convert on its opportunities. The Orange defense was tested in the final five minutes in the half when it successfully defended against three Colgate corner kicks to keep the score tied at 0-0 at intermission.
Syracuse continued to apply the offensive pressure at the beginning of the second half, generating three shots and a corner kick in the first six minutes of play. The Orange finally broke through in the 60th minute when a ball that was played into the box went off a Colgate player to Skilton. She put her shot in the right corner of the goal for the only tally Syracuse would need. It was Skilton’s third goal of the season.
The Orange offense continued to create opportunities, but couldn’t connect on passes into the box. Colgate’s best scoring chance came in the final minute of play when Sarah Coy got behind the SU defense, but her shot hit the side of the net and the Orange held on for the victory.
“In the second half I asked the team to play more compact, to play more simply with one or two touches,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “I thought they did that. I couldn’t be happier because they executed what I asked them to do.”
Syracuse outshot Colgate, 10-3, while the Raiders held a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks. Anghel and Raiders’ goalkeeper Erin Cummings each finished with one save.
The Orange tries to extend its winning streak to three games when it takes on Connecticut on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free of charge.
