Arkansas Tops Ole Miss, Keeps Pace In SEC
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – No. 15 Arkansas won on the road Sunday in Oxford, Mississippi, to top Ole Miss 2-1 and improve to 11-1-0 overall and 4-0 in the Southeastern Conference.
The victory was a come-from-behind effort by the Razorbacks, down 1-0 early in the first half after Ole Miss sophomore forward CeCe Kizer scored a goal during the waning moments of the 4th minute.
It was all Arkansas from that moment on, with freshman forward Kayla McKeon scoring the equalizer in the 22nd minute of play and senior midfielder Claire Kelley heading in the game-winner in the second half assisted by sophomore midfielder Reece Christopherson.
“Ole Miss is extremely dangerous and I thought we dealt with that well,” head coach Colby Hale said. “Playing on the road on Sunday in 95-degree heat isn’t easy but this team thrives when it isn’t easy. I couldn’t be more proud of this team. We have a lot to work on as a group to get to the next level, but the heart and determination this team plays with inspires me. This team has something special.”
McKeon has scored a team-leading seven goals this season and earned a team-high 14 points. Kelley’s goal was her second of the year, and along with her team-leading eight assists, placed her second on the team overall with 12 points.
With the win, Arkansas remained tied at first place with South Carolina (10-0-1, 4-0-0) in SEC standings. The Rebels dropped to 6-6-0 overall on the season and 1-3 in conference play.
Reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Week goalkeeper Cameron Carter improved to 11-1 on the season, logging four saves in the contest.
Arkansas recorded 16 shots in the match with nine on goal, and held a 7-1 advantage over Ole Miss in corners.
The Razorbacks will play their next two games at home, hosting Georgia (3-7-1, 0-4-0) on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. and Vanderbilt (7-4-0, 3-1-0) on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. The match against the Bulldogs will be streamed live on SEC Network+ via the WatchESPN app, while the weekend contest against the Commodores will be a nationally televised match on SEC Network.
