Asare scores twice in FMU Senior Day win
FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University senior forward Elizabeth Asare scored once in each half, appropriately enough on Senior Day, to help carry Francis Marion University to a 2-0 shutout win over Delaware State University, Sunday afternoon (Oct. 26) in non-conference women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion has won three of its last four matches to improve to 3-11-0. The Patriots will conclude their season next weekend (Oct. 31 and Nov. 1) at the Division I Independent Schools Tournament in Dover, Del.
Asare broke a scoreless deadlock in the 30th minute with an eight-yard shot that nestled into the left corner of the DSU goal. Sophomores Kelly Anthony and Tori Whigham both assisted on the score.
The Canadian International doubled the lead at the 74:50 mark when she received a clearance from senior defender Sandy Odembo near midfield, dribbled through a pair of Hornet defenders, and beat DSU goalkeeper Katelyn Koslosky to her left.
The two scores give Asare a team-leading seven goals this season and 19 for her career in 68 matches.
Asare had two opportunities to record a hat trick with 1v1 situations with Koslosky. Asare’s chip shot in 86th minute was knocked away by the Hornet keeper and then in the 89th minute Koslosky came off her line and stone-walled an attempt by Asare near the top of the penalty area.
FMU junior goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry earned the shutout win while making five saves. The Jacksonville, Fla., native pushed her school-record career saves to 293.
Francis Marion outshot Delaware State 16-9 and both teams took four corner kicks.
Delaware State threatened both early and late in the second stanza. The best opportunity came in the 53rd minute when a cross found Taylor Pratcher alone atop the six-yard box, but her quick shot skied over the crossbar. Dina Isham corralled a loose ball in the box in the 89th minute, but her shot from 11 yards out was straight at O’Berry.
Koslosky finished with six saves as the Hornets drop to 3-12-1.
In addition to Asare and Odembo, FMU also honored defender Brittney Smith, midfielder Chanel Harris, midfielder Lexxis Cherry, midfielder Kimberley Hurter, and defender Kristina Marra in a Senior Day ceremony prior to kick off.
