Aztec Men’s Soccer Drops Match at No. 15 Stanford, 2-0
SDSU held to season-low five shot attempts in loss
PALO ALTO, Calif. – The San Diego State men’s soccer team couldn’t keep pace with No. 15th-ranked Stanford on Thursday night, as the Aztecs fell on the road to the Cardinal, 2-0, at Cagan Stadium. Stanford has now won eight of its last nine matches.
SDSU (6-5, 0-2 Pac-12) fell behind in the first half when Stanford’s Zach Batteer scored on a header off a cross from Jimmy Callinan in the 22nd minute. Stanford (8-2, 2-1) added an insurance goal in the second half, as Callinan recorded his second assist of the night on pass to Brandon Vincent for a score in the 72nd minute, giving the Cardinal a demanding 2-0 advantage.
San Diego State recorded a season-low five shots as a team on Thursday, with freshman forward Donald Benamna tallying a team-high two attempts. Junior defender Casey Phillips, freshman midfielder Jeff Rhodes and freshman forward David Olsen each recorded one shot apiece, while redshirt freshman goalkeeper Adam Allmaras finished with two saves.
Stanford’s first score came just minutes before a header by Benamna sailed high in the 30th minute and shot from Phillips went wide in the 36th minute. Olsen got off the first shot attempt of the night for the Aztecs in the 14th minute, which went wide of the net.
SDSU still leads the all-time series against Stanford 12-9-7, and is 2-4-2 in its last eight meetings with the Cardinal. The Aztecs look to earn their first Pac-12 victory of the season on Sunday, when they continue their Northern California road trip at No. 22 California beginning at 2 p.m. PT.
