Bacon Sparks Scranton Past Goucher, 2-0
Sophomore forward Kelsey Bacon (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) scored in the 34th minute to spark The University of Scranton women’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Goucher on Saturday at Fitzpatrick Field.
Bacon’s goal snapped a three-game goal-less streak for the Royals (6-5-2, 2-0-1) and gave Scranton its first win in its last four matches. It also extended Scranton’s winning streak against Landmark Conference foes to 35 matches, including playoffs. The Royals are 29-0-6 during that streak.
The goal by Bacon came off a nice combination play by the Royals. Junior defender Jasmine Sconciafurno (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic Valley) threaded a pass through the defense to junior forward Gianna Vitolo (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls), who found Bacon in front for the point-blank shot.
The goal was Bacon’s third of the season and 13th of her career. Vitolo picked up her fourth assist of the season and 10th of her career, and Sconciafurno was credited with her first career assist.
Scranton held off Goucher (3-9-1, 0-3 Landmark) despite strong second-half pressure from the Gophers. The Royals secured the win when they scored an own goal in the 85th minute when junior midfielder Erin Allen (Syosset, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) sent a cross into the box where a Goucher defender knocked the ball into the goal.
The Royals held a 16-5 advantage in shots and 7-2 in corner kicks. Sophomore forward Christina Akalski (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) led Scranton with five shots, including four on goal.
Scranton returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 15, when it hosts Drew in a Landmark Conference match at 7 p.m.
