Badgers Pull Away From Panthers In 2nd Half
MADISON, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin scored a pair of goals in the second half to pull away from the Milwaukee men's soccer team and claim a 3-0 victory Tuesday night at McClimon Soccer Complex.
The Panthers (6-6-2) could never get on track against the Badgers (8-3-2), a team that just had its five-game unbeaten streak snapped in overtime at No. 1 Maryland in their most recent outing in a game they led in the final minutes.
Wisconsin scored an early goal before both teams battled it out from there until early in the second half. A penalty kick in the 52nd minute gave UW the momentum it needed and it added an insurance goal when UWM goalkeeper Oliver Haslund was screened on a free kick in the 70th minute.
The Milwaukee offense accounted for eight shots overall, but could put just two of them on target. The lone second-half on-frame chance came after a close-range shot by Francesco Saporito was blocked wide of the post. The following corner kick bounced back out on top where Matthias Binder was waiting, only to see his attempt unable to sneak inside the post and secured by the UW keeper.
Shots were hard to come by either way in the first half, as the two state rivals grinded it out in a defensive-minded attack. Each team had just four shots, with a combined three on target.
The Badgers struck early, scoring after a wild-looking cross from the endline connected with Brian Hail well past the other side of the goal mouth, finishing right back across the other way for his first goal of the season at the 8:27 mark.
Haslund took care of his other threatening opportunity, making a nice save on a shot from the wing following a Wisconsin counter attack later in the period.
The Panthers compiled their four chances without truly finding a dangerous threat. Magnus Flaatedal forced the only save of the period on a blast from distance in the 24th minute, while Jaime Colin volleyed a corner kick played back out to him just over the crossbar in the 41st minute.
For the game, UWM trailed, 13-to-8 in shots and 5-to-2 in shots on goal. Haslund ended with two saves and Binder and Stephen Andrusko led the way with two shots each. Christopher Mueller had a goal and two assists for the Badgers.
Up next is another big contest for the Panthers, heading to Green Bay for the annual battle for the "Chancellor's Cup". The contest will start at 7 p.m. Saturday and will be televised live on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
