Badgers remain unbeaten in Big Ten with 2-1 win over Michigan
MADISON, Wis.-- The Wisconsin men's soccer team earned its first ever victory over Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., with a 2-1 decision over the Wolverines Sunday afternoon.
The win also marks just the third time the Badgers have defeated the Wolverines and first since the 2006 season.
"It was a great result, in a great stadium," remarked head coach John Trask. "We talk about how tough it is to win in the Big Ten, especially away from home. We will take the result and keep moving forward."
Junior Tomislav Zadro (Toronto, Ontario) wasted no time keeping his scoring streak alive. The junior midfielder provided the Badgers with an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the ninth minute.
Sophomore Joey Tennyson (Milwaukee, Wis.) earned an assist on the goal that improved Zadro's scoring streak to 10 games.
Just before the end of the half, senior Josh Thiermann (Stoughton, Wis.) added to Wisconsin's' lead, converting on a header to put the Badgers up 2-0 at the 41:40 mark.
Zadro earned another point on the assist and now leads the team with 15 points.
Despite being outshot, 7-5, in the half, UW took its 2-0 advantage into the break.
The Wolverines converted on one of their 16 shots in the second half to cut their deficit in half.
In the 61st minute, Kofi Opare netted Michigan's lone goal with a header off teammate Fabio Pereira's corner kick.
Michigan had plenty of opportunities to continue its historic dominance over Wisconsin but simply could not convert.
On the afternoon, Michigan outshot Wisconsin, 23-6 and committed just three fouls to UW's 18.
Sophomore goalkeeper Max Jentsch (Hartland, Wis.) recorded four saves, while improving his record to 4-1-2.
Wisconsin improves its overall record to 6-4-2 and 2-0-0 in the Big Ten. The Wolverines fall to 3-9-1 on the season and 1-2-0 in the Big Ten.
UW has now won its first two conference contests for the first time since the 1995 season, when Wisconsin won the Big Ten title.
The Badgers will spend the next week preparing to host Michigan State. Wisconsin squares off against the Spartans at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16 at the McClimon Complex.
