Balanced offense leads Spartans to split
OLIVET, MICH. – Four different players produced goals for Manchester University’s women’s soccer squad at the Olivet College of Michigan tournament August 31-September 1.
Behind those four goals, the Black and Gold ended the weekend road trip with a split. In a thrilling double-overtime clash with in-state rival Trine, the Spartans dropped a 2-1 decision on Friday. The following evening, Coach Andy Stout’s team rebounded against the tourney hosts with a three-goal explosion in the second half to win 3-0.
The underclasswoman trio of freshman midfielder Lille Terrill (North Manchester, Ind.), sophomore forward Breanna McLane (Westville, Ind.) and sophomore midfielder Amber Kent (Fountaintown, Ind.) grouped together three scores in a span of just over three minutes midway through the second half to lead the way against Olivet. MU’s goal against Trine came from the foot of sophomore forward Katelyn Barta (Griffith, Ind.).
Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.) benefitted from Saturday’s offensive output. She recorded her sixth career shutout with seven saves in the face of a 20-6 shots advantage for Olivet. Willmann ended the weekend with 15 saves.
Manchester returns to action Friday, Sept. 7, when it hosts Goshen College to begin the Raven-Spartan Classic at Spartan Field. Match time is 4 p.m.
