Banes' 5-Point Day Leads Towson in 4-3 2OT Loss to Yale

 

TOWSON, Md. - Senior Emily Banes tied her career high with five points on two goals and an assist, but Towson dropped a 4-3 decision to Yale in two overtimes Sunday afternoon at Tiger Soccer Complex.

 

Yale took an early 1-0 lead just 1:13 into the game and maintained it to halftime. However, Towson came out strong and scored three unanswered goals before the Bulldogs responded with three straight tallies.

 

"I think that we played pretty well for 90 minutes and it's unfortunate we weren't able to close it out in regulation," said Head Coach Greg Paynter. "In overtime, Yale deserved it. They outplayed us, they outhustled us, they beat us to every ball. It takes one opportunity in overtime and they got it."

 

Melissa Gavin put the Bulldogs up early when she received the ball 40 yards out, ran in alone and beat Towson's keeper Erin Quinn low left. Banes had her first opportunity of the day 15 minutes later when her hard strike rebounded off the crossbar with a loud thump.

 

The Tigers came out of the break charging hard and just 32 seconds into the second frame, Banes found the back of the net for her seventh of the season.

 

"We came out of the half intense and focused," noted Paynter. "Emily Banes really set the tone for us, scoring a couple goals and getting fouled. She put their team under a lot of pressure, and we got three good goals."

 

She scored again just two minutes later when she earned a free kick just outside the Yale box. Junior Katlyn Axenfeld took the kick and served it into Banes whose header sailed past Bulldog goalie Rachel Ames at 47:44.

Banes had a hand in Towson's final goal of the day when she controlled the rebound off her own shot and passed it to sophomore Hollie Garber. Garber shot low left for her first goal of the season at 57:30.

 

However, Genny Decker scored on an open net after a good pass from Meredith Speck at 62:16 and Gavin notched her second of the day when her header off a Frannie Coxe corner sailed past Quinn with just 4:34 remaining in regulation.

 

The teams fought through a scoreless first overtime, but Yale took advantage of a Tiger miscue in the midfield andPaula Hagopian put in the game winner for the Bulldogs just 1:14 into the second OT.

 

Towson outshot Yale, 14-13, but the Bulldogs earned eight corners to the Tigers' six. Both teams had six saves.

The Tigers next face St. Francis (Pa.) in Pennsylvania on Friday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m.
