Bayly Powers Columbus State Past Clayton State 2-1 (OT)
Morrow, GA – After falling behind 1-0 early in the match, the Columbus State women's soccer team scored the final two goals to complete a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Peach Belt Conference foe Clayton State.
With the key conference win, CSU now stands at 11-3-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the Peach Belt while Clayton falls to 7-6-1 on the year and 3-4-1 in conference action.
Despite being outshot in the early portion of the contest, Clayton State struck first when Josephine Holsten took a free kick from the top of the penalty box to put the hosts ahead 1-0 in the 21st minute of play. It was her fourth goal of the season.
Columbus State continued its offensive attack on the Lakers and finally was able to crack through at the 57:04 mark in the second half when Kansas Bayly headed home her first goal of the match off a corner kick by Kayla Brown.
Unable to notch the game-winner in regulation, the Lady Cougars took all three shots in overtime including the decisive shot by Bayly just 3:14 into the extra period. Bayly fired the shot from the right wing, a near identical spot as the lone goal in Columbus State's 1-0 victory over then ranked No. 10 North Georgia a week ago.
Bayly, the reigning two-time Peach Belt Conference Defender of the Week, has notched five of her six goals of the season in the past five games. The sophomore has been a vital cog of the CSU defensive line and has sparked the Lady Cougars five-game winning streak.
Columbus State outshot the Lakers 18-5 in the match and held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Mary Mancin upped her season mark to 11-3-2 allowing just one goal while picking up a pair of saves. Laoise O'Driscoll falls to 7-6-1 on the year after surrendering both goals and making five saves.
CSU returns to the pitch this weekend when they host USC Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference tilt on Saturday, October 22 at the Walden Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
