BC Falls To No. 2 Stanford in 2OT

It was the season opener for both teams as BC will now host BU on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 3 p.m. Stanford will travel to Connecticut to play at UConn on Sunday.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead on a great individual effort from sophomore Lauren Bernard. The Eagles defender beat two Stanford players to a loose ball about 25 yards out on the right side of the goalkeeper. Bernard dribbled into the box, beat another Stanford defender and sent the ball into the far post for a BC lead in the 6th minute of play. It was Bernard’s first career goal.
Stanford tied the game five minutes later when Chioma Ubogagu sent the ball into the box and Syndey Payne pounced on the rebound.
Both teams had a number of chances to escape with a win in regulation. BC’s best chance came in the 71st minute when Stephanie McCaffrey broke into the box off a pass from Madison Meehan. The Stanford goalkeeper Emily Oliver (9 saves) came out and cut the angle and made a diving save on McCaffrey’s shot.
With ten minutes left in the game, Ubogagu had a shot from the top of the box. It was the first time that she was free all night but her shot just went wide left. Ubogagu had two other chances just outside the box but BC’s defenders Zoe Lombard and Casey Morrison blocked both shots.
The first overtime neither team could build any offensive attack. In the second overtime, the goal was set up when the referee called a hand ball on BC from about 35 yards out. Obogagu’s kick was saved by BC’s goalkeeper Jess Mickelson (2 saves) but she dropped the ball outside the goal mouth, when Doll tucked it into the back of the net to end the marathon.
