Bears Edge Out ‘Roos, 2-1, in Double OT
(Kansas City, Mo.) – Friday night against the Missouri State Bears (5-3-1), the UMKC women’s soccer team (1-4-3) put up a courageous effort, but fell 2-1 in double overtime.
In the 13th minute, UMKC got off to a fast start with a solo score by sophomore forward Taylor Bare for her team-leading third goal of the season.
Defensively, junior keeper Jami Finnell did a stellar job of keeping the score 1-0 in favor of the ‘Roos. Missouri State had six chances to put the ball in the net, but Finnell saved them all.
In the second half, score still 1-0, the Bears tied the game with a goal by freshman forward Bethany Smith, assisted by junior defender Nia Williams. As time wore on, both teams battled fiercely and the game went into overtime.
Keeping the same intensity throughout, a second overtime was needed to determine a winner.
In 104th minute, Bears redshirt freshman midfielder Miche Mayne-Nicholls scored to end the game. Senior midfielder Christine Cross and Williams, her second of the game, were credited with the assist.
For the ‘Roos, despite being 0-3 all-time against Missouri State after Friday night’s loss, each game has been decided by exactly one goal.
On Sunday, UMKC will look to bounce back when it goes to Colombia to face the Missouri Tigers.
