Beavers Blow Past Aztecs 5-0
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 4 Oregon State men’s soccer team logged another dominant home performance on Saturday, taking down San Diego State 5-0 at Lorenz Field in Corvallis, Ore.
“I really like the way we started,” said Oregon State head coach Terry Boss. “We came out of the gates and matched their intensity – our guys were up for the challenge and they performed well. I was really proud of the group. There are still areas we need to improve on, but overall very proud of the team.”
Junior Gloire Amanda led the way, scoring twice to bring his total to 11 goals this season. The forward leads the nation in goals, and is now tied for fifth in program history for markers in a season. Tsiki Ntsabeleng scored in his first start for the Beavers. Gael Gibert notched his first Oregon State goal, while Javier Armas recorded his second of the season.
With the win, the Beavers now move to 7-1 on the season and 4-1 in Pac-12 play. Oregon State has won all six of it home matches this season,
Oregon State appeared as though it might open the scoring in the fourth minute, as a nice piece of build-up play looked like it might get the Beavers a good look at the target, before the linesman flagged Mouhameth Thiam offside.
The Beavers opened the scoring in the ninth minute, as some excellent combination play down the right-hand side found Amanda nine yards from goal. Joel Walker and Carlos Moliner tallied assists on Amanda’s 10th tally of the campaign.
Ntsabeleng nearly added a second Beaver goal just over five minutes later, but his effort from close range was blocked bravely by an Aztec defender. Mondi fired from outside the box in the 22nd, but the effort dragged just wide of the post.
Oregon State added its second marker in the 31st minute, as Ntsabeleng hammered one home from the penalty spot to double the advantage. Thiam nearly added a third just before the break, but the shot was wide as the Beavers headed to the intermission up 2-0.
It was Amanda yet again early in the second half, as the junior scored from the spot to extend the lead to three. Gibert added the first of his Beaver career in the 53rd, scoring off an assist from Adrian Crespo.
The Beavers came close to adding a fifth just minutes later, but Javier Armas’ free kick rattled the crossbar. Armas did end up finding the net in the 71st to cap off the victory.
Adrian Fernandez notched his fifth clean sheet of the season in the winning effort.
The Beavers will remain at home on Wednesday for a matchup with No. 6 Washington.
