Beavers Draw With Texas, Stay Undefeated
AUSTIN, Texas – The Oregon State women’s soccer team remained undefeated Thursday evening, earning a 1-1 draw against Texas in Austin.
Junior Helene Haavik scored the Beavers’ goal, netting her first of the season in the closing seconds of the first half to give Oregon State a share of the spoils. Oregon State’s 4-0-2 start to the season is the team’s best since it opened the 2010 campaign 5-0-1.
The match also marked the fifth time in six games Oregon State has gone to overtime.
The Beavers created numerous scoring chances in the first half. Freshman Mariah Roggow took the first shot of the game off a cross from sophomore Nikki Faris, but the effort trickled wide. Junior Annie Govig followed that up by taking a shot off a ball whipped into the box by Haavik, but her attempt sailed high.
Texas would take an early lead in the 19th minute, converting a penalty kick. The score snapped an Oregon State streak of 243 minutes without allowing a goal.
The Beavers would continue to pressure the Texas net from there, pressing forward in search of an immediate response. Junior Sabrina Santarossa took a shot from distance in the 30th minute, but the effort was saved.
Haavik would finally put the Beavers on the board with three seconds remaining in the opening frame. Sophomore Kayla Latham made a pass through the left side that found Haavik 10 yards from goal. The junior proceeded to put the ball in the net with a left-footed shot to level the score heading into the break. Overall, Oregon State out-shot Texas 7-6 in the opening 45 minutes.
Scoring chances proved hard to come by for both sides in the closing frame. The Beavers’ best opportunity came on a set piece, when Haavik whipped a ball into the box that senior Gwen Bieck redirected on frame. The Texas (2-2-2) goalie saved the effort, though, and the teams headed to overtime.
Oregon State had a chance to net the golden goal in the 105th minute, when Roggow looked as though she might be in on goal, but the Texas goalkeeper was quick off her line to eliminate the threat, and the game ended in a draw.
Overall the Beavers out-shot the Longhorns 16-13 in the contest, and held Texas to four shots on goal.
The match was late to start, as a two-hour lightning delay pushed back kickoff.
Oregon State will return to action next Thursday, when it faces BYU in Provo, Utah.
