Beavers Earn Draw With No. 17 UC Davis
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men’s soccer team got a result against a ranked opponent Monday evening, as the Beavers earned a 1-1 draw vs. No. 17 UC Davis at Lorenz Field.
OSU out-shot the Aggies 16-12, and was on the front-foot for the majority of the match, including the two overtime periods.
Joel Walker provided the goal for the Beavers, scoring his first of the season in the 57th minute off assists from Sofiane Djeffal and Don Tchilao. With the draw, Oregon State is now unbeaten in five-straight matches.
Oregon State nearly went in front just minutes in, as Tchilao whipped a shot across the face of goal from a tight angle. The senior nearly opened the scoring again in the 21st, but his effort from close range was blocked by a defender.
Djeffal came up with a beautiful free kick from 24 yards out in the 25th, but the attempt bounced off the post. The Beavers continued to create scoring chances, as Tchilao, Gloire Amanda and Kolade Salaudeen all nearly found the net late in the opening half.
Eric Diaz narrowly missed his second goal in as many games early in the second half, as he placed his shot just inches outside the lower corner.
Walker put the Beavers in front with a brilliantly worked goal in the 57th. Tchilao took the ball away from a UC Davis midfielder, before feeding Djeffal at the top of the box. The freshman played the ball to Walker, who slotted it home from the right side.
UC Davis pressed forward, and leveled the score in the 72nd minute to send the match to overtime.
Oregon State came out firing in the first extra period, as Diaz and Adrian Crespo had shots blocked back-to-back. Amanda followed that up with a chance from point-blank range, but it was over the crossbar.
OSU continued to attack in the second overtime, but neither team was able to score, as the match ended 1-1.
Junior Loke Strenov and freshman Alex Cover both made their first start of the season in the match.
The Beavers will remain at home on Friday for a matchup with American. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
