Beavers Take Down Aztecs
CORVALLIS – Don Tchilao’s sixth goal of the season lifted the Oregon State men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over San Diego State Thursday afternoon at Paul Lorenz Field.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our guys,” said Oregon State head coach Terry Boss. “San Diego State is a very good team. I was proud of the way we grew into the match. San Diego State came out flying, but we weathered their first storm and grew into the game from there.”
This win extends Oregon State’s unbeaten streak to five overall and the Beavers have not lost a home match in since Aug. 24.
Tchilao’s goal came on his fourth converted penalty kick of the season, as he slotted one past the keeper in the 69th minute.
The defenses dominated the early going, as scoring chances proved hard to come by through the first 30 minutes. Tchilao took Oregon State’s first shot of the game in the 32nd minute, missing just high from 10 yards out off a nice feed from Joel Walker.
Tchilao had another chance minutes later, as he had a shot deflected out of play from a tight angle for a corner kick. Gloire Amanda took aim as the half was expiring, but his shot was wide as the teams headed to the break scoreless.
Albert Pedra narrowly missed putting the Beavers in front in the 47th, placing his effort just wide of the post. Pedra then drew a foul at the edge of the box in the 69th minute. Tchilao slotted home the penalty kick to put Oregon State in front.
Carlos Moliner nearly doubled the advantage in the 82nd, unloading a rocket from the top of the box that forced a diving save. The Beavers held firm defensively, as goalkeeper Adrian Fernandez recorded his fifth clean sheet of the season.
The Beavers will host senior day Sunday, when they take on UCLA at 2 p.m. The match will air live on Pac-12 Network.
