Best of September: Powered by InStat
A leading video analysis provider, InStat digs into the numbers behind the success (or lack thereof) of players on the field.
In a new monthly feature, TDS will dig into some of the top performances of young players from club, college and professional soccer. Driving the data will be the InStat Index, a number derived by a player’s number of quality action in a game.
Keep in mind that players are only included when their games are added to the database. Below is a look at some of the names that have performed well in September in club and college soccer.
College
Lia Godfrey, Virginia: A strong start to her college career has the freshman measured as the highest-performing women’s DI player at this point in the season as measured by the Index. It’s a relatively small sample size of four games, against ACC opponents, including two matchups against Virginia Tech. Godfrey’s produced statistically, a driving factor in her assessment, scoring twice and adding a pair of assists. She’s created 1.25 chances per game, and averaged 3.5 shots per game. From a pass completed perspective, her 75% completion average on 34 attempted per games, isn’t a huge standout. On her team, she leads Virginia in Chances Created (5), Shots (14) and Shots on Target (7). Her 22 dribbles are third most on the team, as she can beat players while she’s on the ball, completing 82% of them successfully.
Brianna Pinto, North Carolina: Strong performances in UNC’s first two games of the season power Pinto into one of the InStat Index’s top-rated players. It’s only a total of three games so far for the U.S. youth international, but she’s managed to create at least one chance per game, while completing 89% of an average of 28 pass attempts. The pass completion percentage leads the team, and her three chances created overall are tops on the Tar Heels.
Amanda West, Pittsburgh: The Canadian sophomore’s benefited from a soft schedule for Pitt, playing the likes of Appalachian State and The Citadel in a frenetic six-game start to the season. West’s scored in every game, however, and chipped in three assists for good measure. Producing an Expected Goals (xG) of 0.93 per game, she’s also played 10 Key Passes and created 10 Chances, an average of 2.2 per game. Producing a similar output on Thursday night against Virginia would certainly boost her profile even more.
Girls Academy
Amelia Horton, Sporting Blue Valley 02/03: Goal-scoring output has driven Horton’s success in the Girls Academy League, as her team played a total of five games in September. She’s scored five in all, including a hat-trick in a 6-1 win against Lou Fusz SC on September 13. Her goal-scoring rate could be even higher, with a total of 12 Chances to her name in the month. Along with her finishing, she demonstrated a creative side, credited with a total of 5 Chances Created in the opening stretch.
Morgan Roy, Nationals 02/03: The central midfielder has played up with the oldest age group, producing her best match of the month against Century United. Despite being a 2005, Roy has led the team in chance creation, credited with a team-high six in three matches measured by InStat. She sees a good amount of the ball, completing 74% of a total of 129 pass attempts. Unafraid to contest a Challenge, she is second on the team in total Challenges with 78, winning 63% of them. All this despite playing in three of her team’s four matches so far. Roy and teammate Summer Denigan have provided a quality central midfield pairing so far in the 2020 season.
ECNL
Jill Flammia, Richmond United 04: A high-volume shot-taker and quality attacking player on a talented Richmond United side, Flammia’s been her team’s leader in the InStat Index in all three games logged in September. A big part of that is the number of shots taken, as she’s far and away the leader with 24 taken, 11 on goal. She’s scored once and added two assists, and while a higher conversion rate in front of goal is a point of improvement for any attacking player, Flammia’s also been credited with 14 Chances Created in that three-game stretch. In those three games, she’s also completed at least 78% of her passes attempted.
Maile Hayes, Challenge SC 02/03: The Texas A&M commit and 2021 graduate excelled in three matches, standing out in a 3-1 win against Albion Hurricanes on September 19 in particular. In that matchup, she scored once and had an assist, creating a total of two chances for her side. She attempted two Key Passes and attempted 17 Attacking Challenges, winning 53% of them. In the opening stretches of the season, she has 4 Chances Created and averages 4.7 Dribbles per game.
