Big Second Half Lifts Yale
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Dartmouth’s top ranked defense was no match for Yale. Lydia Shaw scored and added an assist as the Bulldogs knocked off the Big Green 3-1 in a key Ivy League match at Reese Stadium.
Dartmouth had yielded only five goals all season. Yale scored a pair in the second half to snap a 1-1 tie.
“We are really happy with how our group responded in the second half after giving up a late goal to end the first half,” said Brendan Faherty, The Loring Family Head Coach of the Bulldogs. “We were able to up our level of play in the final 45 minutes, specifically with our possession and our repressing and were rewarded with two goals and more importantly another win.”
It looked like Dartmouth might grab the early lead when the Big Green was awarded a penalty kick midway through the first half. Yale goalkeeper Alyssa Fagel, though, denied Allie Winstanley.
Four minutes later, it the Bulldogs who were in front. Lydia Shaw finished an Ellery Winkler cross from right in front at 28:11.
The Big Green, though, answered with the equalizer at 38:50 on Erin Kawakami’s goal.
Yale then took control in the second half. Noelle Higginson snapped the tie at 55:51 when a ball deflected out to her just outside the box.
Sarah Jordan added an insurance goal at 66:28 when she one-timed a beautiful forward ball from Shaw past Dartmouth goalkeeper Mariel Gordon.
The Bulldogs had a big edge in possession in the second half and outshot the Big Green 8-3.
“Dartmouth is a well-coached team with very dangerous attacking players, especially their wingers,” Faherty said. “I was happy that we were able to keep the ball for long stretches which limited Dartmouth’s ability to showcase their dynamic attackers.”
The Bulldogs, (9-3, 2-1 Ivy) have won seven of their last eight games.
“As a group, we are happy with where we are at this point in the season – from a results and performance standpoint,” Faherty said. “There is still a third of the season left, and we are excited to continue to grow and represent Yale well on a daily basis.”
The Bulldogs are back in action next Saturday when they host Cornell at 1 p.m.
