NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Binghamton Bearcats in the Purple Eagles’ home opener at Niagara Field on Tuesday evening.

The lone goal for the Bearcats (2-0-0) came in the second half off a right-footed shot by senior forward Sarah Furminger that flew past freshman goalkeeper Claire Feiertag into the top left corner of the goal.

"We're obviously disappointed that we lost," head coach Peter Veltri said. "But if you take everything into perspective, there were a lot of good individual efforts. I thought individually there were probably seven or eight girls that played really well. Again, we're just going to have to learn to put those individual efforts into a team effort, but there were definitely some positives."

The Purple Eagles (0-1-0) came out strong in the opening half, peppering Bearcat goalkeeper Carrie Martin with seven shots, but no goals. Sophomore <dfn>Catherine Meyer</dfn> had three quality scoring opportunities for Niagara, but could not convert.

Binghamton's best chance came a little over 10 minutes into the game when senior forward Jamie Holliday's rocket pinged off the post. Feiertag made a superb save on an attempt by forward Brittany Walsh in the 23rd minute and added four more stops to keep the game scoreless heading into half.

The second half saw the Bearcats apply the pressure, outshooting the Purple Eagles 10-7. Freshman midfielder <dfn>Kori Thorne</dfn> nearly tied the game at one apiece about midway through the game, seeing her high shot from outside the penalty box barely tipped over the crossbar by Martin.

Feiertag finished her first collegiate start with five saves.

"Claire as a freshman, I thought played really well," Veltri added. "She made some key save in the first half to still keep it 0-0 at the half. I thought overall she did well."

The Purple Eagles begin their three-game road trip on Sunday, Sept. 2 when they face the Buffalo Bulls in a non-conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
