Bison Shut Down Drake, 1-0
FARGO, N.D. - Junior Holly Christian scored her third goal of the season and senior goalie Kalani Bertsch became the program's all-time wins leader as the North Dakota State soccer team defeated Drake, 1-0, at the Ellig Sports Complex on Thursday, Sept. 22. The Bison (7-2-0) have now won nine straight home games dating back to last season.
With today's win, Bertsch is now the school's all-time wins leader with 29, surpassing Kelly Tierney's record of 28. Bertsch is also second on the career charts with her 15th career shutout.
NDSU put the pressure on early, notching the first seven shots of the game, including one from sophomore Katie Tallas that was blocked on the goal line by a defender. Christian and Tallas both forced early saves from Bulldog goalie Kalena Litch.
Drake pushed back with three shots on goal, but Bertsch stopped all three.
Christian broke the deadlock in the 41st minute, scoring on a header after senior Abbey Moenkedick's corner kick ricocheted off the crossbar. It was Christian's third goal in two games and Moenkedick's fourth assist of the year.
In a back and forth second half, NDSU tallied six shots, while Drake notched five. In the 76th minute, senior Laura Wagner blocked a header from Drake's Ann Hoover on the goal line. Brittany Schuling sent Drake's final chance of the game high at the 78:56 mark.
Tallas and junior Brooklyn Dyce notched late attempts at a second goal for the Bison, but both shots were blocked by Drake defenders.
The Bison outshot Drake, 17-12, and tallied eight shots on goal to Drake's four. Drake held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
The Bison put their win streak on the line again Sunday, Sept. 25 as they take on North Dakota at 12 p.m. at the Ellig Sports Complex.
