Bisons fall short in 3-2 defeat
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Falling behind 2-0 in the first half, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team was unable to fight back in a 3-2 loss to Elon in the Hyatt Place Select Lipscomb Invitational at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex Friday night.
“I’m disappointed in the way we came out in the first half,” said Lipscomb head coach Charles Morrow. “I think we were a little intimidated be Elon and early pressure certainly didn’t help our confidence.”
Elon (2-1-0, 0-0-0 SoCon) scored in the fifth minute beating a diving Lipscomb goalkeeper John Schnurbusch.
Lipscomb (1-4-0, 0-0-0 ASUN) gave up an own goal in the 20th minute off an Elon free kick, as the Phoenix took the 2-0 lead into half.
“We thought we made some good changes in the second half,” Morrow said. “Players played at a different level and had a better commitment to the things we were trying to do and it showed in our performance.”
Six minutes into the second half, Lipscomb made a point that the Phoenix wouldn’t have their way the entire game. Ethan Summers took aim from the corner of the 18-yard box that Elon goalkeeper Nathan Dean made a diving save on. However, Dean blocked the ball right into the feet of a charging Zander El-Hindi who made sure the ball was going into the net.
Elon added a goal in the 82nd minute with a penalty kick coming from Chris Thomas, taking a 3-1 lead.
Making an exciting finish, Omar Djabi took a Lipscomb free kick from midfield finding Josue Chavez who broke free from the Elon defense pounding the ball into the back of the net in the 88th minute.
With two chances in the final minute of play both Lipscomb shots fell short giving the final score of 3-2.
Elon attacked with 16 shots landing seven on frame while Lipscomb countered with eight shots, all in the second half.
Morrow said “What we’ve got to do with this young group is hammer in to come out with more confidence and try to employ some of these things at the beginning of the game so we don’t dig ourselves into a hole like we did tonight.”
The Bisons continue play in the Hyatt Place Select Lipscomb Invitation on Sunday, with a 2:30 p.m. match with Oral Roberts. The preceding game between Belmont and Elon takes place at noon.
