Blanks and Correll earn PL weekly awards
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following an impressive 2-0 season-opening win over Binghamton, a pair of Lehigh women's soccer players received Patriot League weekly awards, as announced on Monday. Senior Ashley Blanks was named the league's Goalkeeper of the Week after a six-save shutout while freshman Grace Correll earned Rookie of the Week after her one-goal, one-assist effort.
Blanks' seventh-career shutout led to her third-career Goalie of the Week honor. She posted three saves in each half on Sunday, none better than her stop in the 41st minute when the game was still scoreless. Blanks punched a high arcing shot off the crossbar before catching the rebound. Just minutes later, Lehigh scored to make it 1-0 heading into halftime. Blanks was in control, making several other strong plays to deny Binghamton scoring chances.
Correll came off the bench to have a hand in both Lehigh goals on Sunday. One of six Mountain Hawk freshmen to see action, she finished a nifty header in the 45th minute off a Paige Elliott pass to make it 1-0. Correll went on to assist on Darby Wiegand's second-half goal, also a header.
Elliott also received honorable mention recognition after her assist and strong play on the defensive line, helping Lehigh win its season opener for the first time since 2009.
The Mountain Hawks return to action next Sunday (Aug. 31) when they travel to Mount St. Mary's for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
