September 11, 2011

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- The Notre Dame men's soccer team earned its fourth win of the 2011 season with a, 5-1, victory over Georgetown (Ky.), on Saturday night (Sept. 10) at the GC Soccer Complex in the final match of the Georgetown Classic.

Junior forward Dean Miller (Johannesburg, South Africa/Lakeland CC) tallied the game's opening goal -- his third of the season -- in the 18th minute, while sophomore goalkeeper Jan Skorupinski (Vogt, Germany/Vogt) registered four saves.

It was a confident performance by, freshman forward Martin Lange (Berlin, Germany/Werner Seegenbinder Schule) in his first start and second career game that inspired Notre Dame to dominating win.

Lange put his mark on the game early and often, first the Berlin, Germany, native threaded a nice square ball to Miller who volleyed the pass into the net giving the Falcons a, 1-0, lead in the 18th minute.

As the Blue & White poured on the pressure piling on 12 first half shots, junior midfielder Christian Earnest (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/ Cuyahoga) tracked a ball down in the corner. Earnest beat a Tiger defender before sending a whipped ball into the box. The earlier provider, Lange connected with Earnest's service and sent a deft header into the left corner of the goal for a, 2-0, lead by NDC.

Sophomore midfielder Tom Owens (Liverpool, England/Halewood) corner kick initially found the 6-foot-4, Jacob Sheppard (Brampton, Ontario/ Bramalea). The center back headed across the goal for an easy finish by Lange in the 39th minute.

The opening half would close with Notre Dame leading, 3-0. Through the opening 45 minutes the Falcons peppered the Tigers goal outshooting the hosts 22-to-8 and held a-2-0 lead in corner kicks.

Owens would open the second half in the 51st minute when he picked Earnest out with a through ball on a breakaway. Earnest would do well and slide the ball past the helpless Dan Rothwell for a, 4-0, lead.

Lange would conclude his day with a goal just four minutes later. Lange made his finish of the evening, one of the best in 2011. Carlo Manna (Sydney, Australia/Kingswood) would find Lange for the best finish of the evening when. Lange's diving header gave Notre Dame a commanding, 5-0 lead in the 55th minute.

16 minutes from stoppage, the Falcons surrendered a goal to Aldo Torres. Torres' first shot struck the crossbar before collecting the arrant strike and finished past Jan Skorupinski for a, 5-1 victory to NDC.

"The starting eleven was very different today because we took a chance with one or two players and rested some others. For 55 minutes we looked comfortable. It was only when we made multiple substitutions, with 30 minutes to go, that we lost our shape. We're disappointed we didn't keep a clean sheet, but we're obviously pleased with the result," commented Coach Mac.

* NDC fielded a total of 24 players versus Georgetown College, a season high.
