Bobcats drop tight one to Notre Dame
Buckhannon, W.Va. -- Men's Soccer fall 3-2 to Notre Dame Falcons in a closely fought match Wednesday evening.
It was the Falcons who had the first chance of the game with 10 minutes played, after a through ball from Notre Dame's Adam Mitchell found Chris Fairley, but Wesleyan's goalkeeper Luka Pauk was quick of his line to deny the chance.
In the 12th minute, Rodrigo Bevaqua had a strike from 25 yards out that took the Falcon's goalkeeper, Jan Skorupinski, by surprise. He could only parry the shot to his left where the incoming Jordan Halpern volleyed the ball near post giving the Bobcats the 1-0 lead.
Wesleyan's lead was short lived, as in the 15th minute Notre Dame's Mitchell broke away from half with a free run into Wesleyan's box, shooting low past Pauk to tie the game 1-1.
Wesleyan responded in the 20th minute, when Bevaqua, wide on the right, found Halpern in the box who took his chance well, smashing the ball past Skorupinski for a 2-1 advantage.
With 28 minutes played, Matthew Brown almost made it 3-1 but his first-time strike from a Joe Ferraracci cross narrowly went left of the post.
The Bobcat's took the lead into the second half, but the Falcon's found their equalizer in the 62nd minute. A free kick wide on the right was delivered into Wesleyan's box and was headed in by Declan McGivern.
Disaster struck just 5 minute later, when another free kick in similar territory was only partially cleared and the ball was picked up by the Falcon's Phillip Cutler, who volleyed over Wesleyan's defense and Pauk.
Wesleyan had a good chance in the 77th minute, when Ferraracci headed from a Halpern cross but was denied by the oncoming Falcon's goalkeeper.
Wesleyan pushed for the equalizer with their best chance coming in the 82nd minute. Tyler Marshall with the ball wide on the left delivered a low cross to Halpern on the edge of the box whose goal bound shot was deflected wide.
Men's Soccer are now 3-3-2 in the Conference and 5-5-3 overall. They travel to Urbana Saturday October 19 for a 3:00pm kick-off.
