Boise State's Heidemann Earns Weekly Award
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Boise State junior Brooke Heidemann was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 7, the conference announced Monday. Heidemann scored three goals and registered an assist to rack up seven points in Boise State’s weekend sweep of in-state rivals Idaho and Idaho State to lead the Broncos to the Governor’s Cup. This is the second weekly award of Heidemann’s career.
Boise State changed formations heading into the week, moving Heidemann from attacking midfielder to central forward. She responded with a goal almost immediately in the match against Idaho and netted two more against Idaho State, her first-career multi-goal game. She also had an assist against the Bengals, scoring a career-high five points in the match.
In the Friday match at Idaho, Heidemann wasted little time putting Boise State ahead. She punched in a goal in the fifth minute and it proved to be the difference in a 2-0 victory. It was Heidemann’s first game-winning goal of the season and sixth of her career.
Heidemann, a native of Meridian, Idaho, got Boise State’s home opener off to a raucous start Sunday, against Idaho State. She scored the first goal of the match in the 15th minute. Less than five minutes later she slid a pass across the box to KT Clayton for what would end up the game-winning goal. It was Heidemann’s second assist of the season, but her day was still not done.
In the 63rd minute, the junior put away one of the most impressive goals in recent Boise State history. Teammate Kayla Tucker sent a cross from the right wing to the far post. Heidemann raced in, left her feet and soared over the top of the Idaho State defender to meet the ball for a flying header directed just inside the right post.
Heidemann scored her three goals with marksman-like efficiency. She took just five shots in the two games and all three she put on target found the back of the net. Heidemann took three shots at Idaho and needed just two shots to score twice against Idaho State.
With seven points on the week, Heidemann now has 35 for her career and vaulted all the way to a tie for eighth all-time at Boise State in the career category. More than half of those points have come in the last 14 matches. Including the final eight games of 2013, Heidemann has 18 points during that span. She leads the Mountain West with 10 points through six matches this season.
This is the first MW Offensive Player of the Week award for a Bronco this season. Freshman goalkeeper Janelle Flores earned Defensive Player of the Week honors in the season’s opening week. It is the fourth offensive honor Boise State has earned since joining the Mountain West, and 14th in program history regardless of conference. Heidemann joins Shannon Saxton as the only Broncos to earn multiple offensive weekly awards in their careers. Saxton was a four-time WAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Heidemann and the Broncos will return to the field Monday, at home against Gonzaga. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. (MT), at the Boas Soccer Complex.
