<div class="rich clearfix"> <p><strong>MILWAUKEE, Wisc. &ndash;</strong>&nbsp;The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team (0-2) concluded a challenging opening weekend on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to the Milwaukee Panthers (1-0-1) at Engelmann Stadium.<br /><br />Milwaukee, which has won 12 straight regular-season Horizon League championships, got on the board first with a goal from Vienna Behnke in the 35th minute. The strike came off a quick restart following one of St. Bonaventure's three first-half fouls, and also represented the first tally of the year for the Panthers, who played No. 24 South Carolina to a scoreless draw on Friday evening.<br /><br />The Panthers, who are receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Poll, added an insurance tally in the 63rd minute off the foot of Amy Kauffung shortly after rain started to fall on the turf surface. The sophomore midfielder delivered a low, driven shot from the top of the box past a diving&nbsp;<a href="http://www.gobonnies.com/sports/w-soccer/2012-13/bios/kerkman%20kathryn%200chc">Katie Kerkman</a>.<br /><br />Just after Milwaukee took the 2-0 advantage, officials called a weather delay and suspended play in the 71st minute with lightning in the area. Following the 40-minute delay, play resumed and the Panthers padded their lead with a goal in the 78th minute as Sammy Vovos finished a cross into the center of the box. Sara Zawacki concluded the UWM scoring with a goal in the 88th minute.<br /><br />The setback to the Panthers wraps up a difficult opening weekend for the Bonnies, who suffered back-to-back 4-0 losses following a defeat to No. 16/14 Marquette on Friday evening in the season opener. Prior to that, the Bonnies had not lost a 4-0 game since Sept. 20, 2009, against Pittsburgh.<br /><br />Kerkman, who made her second straight start in net for the Bonnies, stopped four Milwaukee shots. A native of Milwaukee suburb Meqoun, Kerkman also got the start against Milwaukee-based Marquette.<br /><br />Freshman&nbsp;<a href="http://www.gobonnies.com/sports/w-soccer/2012-13/bios/maiello%20abigail%20b6vj">Abby Maiello</a>&nbsp;accounted for two of Bonaventure's three shots on goal in the contest as the Mechanicville, N.Y. native played 82 minutes. Classmate&nbsp;<a href="http://www.gobonnies.com/sports/w-soccer/2012-13/bios/jenkins%20stephanie%20a7jm">Stephanie Jenkins</a>&nbsp;also put a shot on frame, but it was turned away by Panthers' keeper Jamie Forbes, who opened her senior season with back-to-back shutouts.<br /><br />The Bonnies were without starting midfielder&nbsp;<a href="http://www.gobonnies.com/sports/w-soccer/2012-13/bios/calabria%20jordan%206ad2">Jordan Calabria</a>, who suffered an injury in the opener against Marquette. Calabria, a junior, had played in all 42 games of her career until sitting out Sunday.<br /><br />Bona sported pink jerseys and matching socks in honor of former Milwaukee coach Laura Moynihan, who lost her battle with cancer not even a year after taking over the program in 1991. Milwaukee's home field was named after her last August, at the beginning of an NCAA Tournament season for the Panthers, who were coached there by Laura's son, Mike.<br /><br />St. Bonaventure will open the home portion of its 2012 schedule on Friday at 5 p.m. when it faces Pittsburgh at McGraw-Jennings Field. The match with the Panthers will begin a four-game, two-week homestand for the Bonnies.</p> </div>
