Oct. 29, 2012
BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University sophomores Bailey Fontenot and Kristin Bos were honored by the Southland Conference today for their efforts in Lamar’s 2-0 win over Sam Houston in women’s soccer on Friday night.
Fontenot (Beaumont, Texas) was named the goalkeeper of the week, while Bos (Valencia, Calif.) was named co-offensive player of the week. The honors were the first for the Lady Cardinals this season.
Fontenot picked up her school-record 10th win of the season in the victory over Sam Houston, while matching the school mark with her sixth shutout of the year. Fontenot made four saves in the victory as Lamar (10-8-1 overall, 6-2-0 Southland) clinched second place in the conference.
Bos had a goal and an assist in the victory, giving her school records for goals (10) and points (23) in a season.
“I’m happy for Bailey and Kristin,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “They have had great seasons, and they continued that against Sam Houston. They deserve to be recognized.”
By virtue of its second-place finish, Lamar earned a bye into the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament. The Lady Cardinals take to the field at 7 p.m. Friday at McNeese State to meet the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal game between Southeastern Louisiana and McNeese State. The championship game is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at McNeese State. The tournament champion receives an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
