Boston College women stun #1 Florida State
Boston College scored two second half goals on the way to a 3-2 victory over No. 1 ranked Florida State in front of 663 fans at the Newton Soccer Field on Thursday night.
This was the first time in BC's women's soccer history that the Eagles have defeated the Seminoles. BC became the first ACC team to score a goal against Florida State this season.
Prior to the match, Florida State had given up only three goals for all season (two vs. Minn. On Aug. 17 and one vs. Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 7). Florida State had shut out nine straight teams before tonight's victory by BC.
"Privately behind the scenes we've been playing like this all year. And we didn't get the results. Internally, we've thought we've been playing real well. So with a little bit of luck, things will go our way,'' said BC Head Coach Alison Foley. "This was well deserved. The kids needed it. I think they've been battling.''
The Eagles offense was led by Kate McCarthy, Stephanie McCaffrey Kristie Mewis andVictoria DiMartino. McCarthy, McCaffrey and Mewis all tallied goals while DiMartino had two assists.
BC is now 10-5-2 overall and 4-4 in the ACC. FSU is now 14-1 and 7-1 in the conference.
FSU was the first to get on the board at 36:48 in the half when Kristen Grubka headed a corner kick into the far post. It was her fifth goal of the season.
Four minutes later, Kate McCarthy one-timed the ball from nine yards out into the far post to the right of the goalkeeper to tie the match at 1-1. McCarthy was set on a cross from DiMartino and a soft pass from Stephanie McCaffrey. It was the first goal scored against Florida State since Sept. 7.
Florida State held a 9-6 edge in shots at the half. The Seminoles also had four corner kicks to BC's three.
FSU had a solid chance to go up in the match when Tiffany McCarty headed a beautiful ball from Kasey Kallman towards the BC goal. The ball hit the near post and BC goalkeeper Alexa Gaul (three saves) smothered the rebound to keep the game tied at 1-1 in the 57th minute.
McCaffrey was active all night down the sideline for the Eagles. The hard work paid off as she became the recipient of a beautiful cross from DiMartino from the left side. McCaffrey made a run towards goal and one-timed the ball into the goal for a 2-1 BC lead in the 67th minute. It was DiMartino's second assist of the match and McCaffrey's ninth goal of the season.
The Eagles confidence grew when Mewis gave BC a 3-1 lead in the 80th minute. The senior midfielder ripped a left-footed shot from 25-yards out into the top right corner. FSU goalkeeper Kelsey Wys (five saves) could not catch up to the velocity or the placement of the shot by Mewis. It was the 13th goal of the season by Mewis.
In typical BC-FSU the game was not over. FSU came back in the 82nd minute when a miscue by the Eages defense resulted in an easy goal by Jessica Price.
The Eagles regained their composure as McCarthy, Patrice Vettori, Mewis and the back line of Zoe Lombard, Lauren Bernard,Rachel Davitt and Casey Morrison continued to clear the ball out of the offensive zone to hold onto to the one-goal victory.
Boston College finished the match with 12 shots, while FSU had 13. Both teams had five corner kicks in the match.
Prior to tonight's match, BC had only scored two goals against FSU in 10 matches. This was the highest scoring match between the two teams since the Eagles lost to the Seminoles, 3-2, in 2009. The Eagles 3-2 win marks the seventh one-goal game between the two teams.
Boston College's next home game is on Sunday, October 20 as the Eagles host Miami at 1 p.m. Prior to the match, the women's soccer program will honor the senior class - Kristen Mewis, Victoria DiMartino, Alicia Blose, Maddie Payne, Alexa Gaul andMorgan Hiler.
