Boyd's Early Goal Gives Warhawks WIAC Win
An unassisted goal by Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) 31 seconds into the match ended a three match scoring drought and led the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over UW-Platteville Wednesday evening at Pioneer Stadium in Platteville.
The win is the first for the Warhawks in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action. UW-W is now 7-8-1 overall and 1-4 in league play. The Pioneers fall to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
Outside of the goal in the first minute of play, the teams totaled thirteen more shots the rest of the match.
The Pioneers tested Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) in the 15th minute, but Yonan positioned herself to make the save.
Anna Perona (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy), Jenel Karow (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and Payton DeLuga(Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) each had shots on goal for the Warhawks in the first 45 minutes, but Pioneer keeper Kathryn Flaherty was positioned to make saves on all three.
Sophomore Anna Brodjian (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) tested Flaherty again in the 65th minute, but the UW-P keeper made the stop.
Platteville had an opportunity for an equalizer in the 80th minute but Yonan made another save. The Warhawks also got some help from the crossbar in the final minute of play to complete the shutout.
Yonan finished with two saves for her fifth shutout of the season and is now 5-8-1.
UW-W will return to action on Saturday when they host UW-Stout at 3 p.m. for their annual "Play for a Cause" match. This season the Warhawks will play to bring awareness to Autism.
