Braude Lifts NU Past Providence In 2OT, 2-1
Trailing 1-0 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, Conner Alexander forced overtime before Laurence Braude scored with 30 seconds left in the second overtime to lift the Northeastern men's soccer team (1-0-0) past Providence (0-1-0) on Friday night at Parsons Field, 2-1.
“It feels unbelievable,” said head coach Brian Ainscough. “For me and the boys, we've lost a lot of those games and left a lot of points on the table in the past, so this gives them a lot of confidence. The players played very well and we are ecstatic to get the win.”
Braude's goal came when he collected a loose ball on the left side, ran into the box and beat PC goalkeeper Bryon Regester (two saves) for his third career game-winning goal. The Huskies held a 13-9 advantage in shots in the game, including a 7-4 edge in the second half and overtime.
Both teams traded chances throughout the first 45 minutes of play, with Northeastern holding a slight edge in shots, 6-5. The Friars generated five corner opportunities during the opening half, and nearly took an early lead as Jeff Kilday sent a shot over the cross bar in the seventh minute.
NU's best chance of the half came in the 17th minute as Don Anding redirected a beautiful cross from Dante Marini on the left, but Regester swallowed the ball to keep the game scoreless.
The action picked up in the second half as Providence took a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute as Keith Jecewiz netted his first goal of the season. Marc Cintron started the play by chipping the ball over the NU defense and onto the foot of Jecewiz, who fired it past NU goalkeeper Oliver Blum for the score.
The physicality increased as the second half wore on, with three yellow cards assessed following a foul on Jonathan Eckford in the 68th minute. Later in the half, Eckford nearly knotted the score at one as he connected on a rebound, but sent the ball just over the crossbar.
Northeastern would net the equalizer in the 86th minute as Alexander scored his first goal of the season when he gathered a loose ball, sprinted down the left side and fired a shot past Regester to force overtime.
NU outshot the Friars 2-1 in extra time with both teams earning one corner before Braude's goal.
Northeastern returns to action on Tuesday as the Huskies travel to Poughkeepsie, N.J. to battle Marist at 7 p.m.
