Broman’s score provides FMU 1-1 road tie
MONTEVALLO, AL – In a re-match of last year’s Peach Belt Conference Tournament title match, freshman Julius Broman’s second-half goal helped Francis Marion University rally for a 1-1 tie with the University of Montevallo, Saturday afternoon (Sept. 27) in PBC men’s soccer action.
Francis Marion is now 5-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference, while the Falcons are 3-1-3 and 0-0-2. Even with the tie, Francis Marion extended its best season start to 15 years dating back to the 2000 season when the Patriots won 17 of their first 18 matches.
FMU will continue a three-match road swing with a Peach Belt contest at UNC Pembroke on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. The next home match for Francis Marion will be Oct. 8 against Erskine College.
After a scoreless first half, Steven Didik gave Montevallo a 1-0 advantage when he scored off an assist from Steven Rocca at the 59:35 mark. Francis Marion pushed for the equalizer and finally found it when Broman scored at 77:04. Freshman Harrison Smith assisted on the goal as his initial shot was saved but the rebound came to the feet of Broman who tallied his team-leading fifth goal.
Smith nearly accounted for the match-winning score when his cross from the left side in the 85th minute found a hard-charging Jeremy Bonyaa in the 6-yard box, but the sophomore defender’s shot was wide of the right post. Likewise, Didik just missed on an attempt in the final minute of regulation.
FMU had one shot in the first overtime period, while the Falcons launched four shots in the second extra session. None of the shots in overtime were on frame.
Altogether, Montevallo outshot the Patriots 19-9 and held an 11-5 advantage in corner kicks.
FMU sophomore goalkeeper Mike Warn recorded five saves, while Montevallo’s Yannic Horn made three saves.
