Broncs Drop 2OT Heartbreaker to UMKC
EDINBURG – The Kansas City Kangaroos scored the game-winning goal with 57 seconds left in the second overtime to beat the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's soccer team 2-1 on Sunday at the UTPA Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
With just over one minute remaining, Nikki Lynch and freshman Hannah Pressley were battling for the ball at midfield. Pressley took control of the ball, at which point Lynch grabbed Pressley and pulled her away. Lynch took control of the ball and dribbled towards the top of the box. She then sent a pass to the right to Whitney Lucas, who found the far back low corner of the net to end the match.
That capped a physical match that saw the Kangaroos (8-3-2, 4-0-0 WAC) get 13 fouls, two yellow cards and one red card, and the Broncs (8-3-4, 2-2-1 WAC) pick up 11 fouls and one yellow card.
The Kangaroos forced freshman goalkeeper Aubrie Coley (5-3-4) to make 10 of her career-high 17 saves in the first half, five of which came in the final five minutes, and eight of which came in the final 20 minutes.
The most sustained stretch of pressure started at 29:25, when, with a wide-open net, Kaely Tott hit the post on a rebound opportunity. Four and a half minutes later, Tott took a feed from Alyssa Elver to net the match's first goal.
The Broncs had several good scoring opportunities in the opening minutes of the second half. About five minutes in, Nina Tzianos (7-3-2) punched a long shot by freshman Aimie Inthoulay over the crossbar, setting up a corner kick by freshman Emily Ortiz, who found freshman Hanna Spets to tie the match at 1-1 on a header.
The Broncs were outshot 35-12, including 19-6 on goal.
The Broncs are back in action on Friday at 4 p.m. when they host Utah Valley at the UTPA Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Gates open at 3.
