Broncs Drop Home Finale
EDINBURG – In their final home match of the season, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women’s soccer team fell to the defending WAC Champion Seattle University Redhawks 4-0 on Sunday at the UTPA Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Broncs (8-5-4, 2-4-1 WAC) freshman Harlingen South alum Erica Gonzalez (3-1-0) was tested often, making a career-high 12 saves.
The Redhawks (10-4-1, 6-1-0) started the scoring at 14:43, when Taylor Ritzman passed the ball ahead in the box to Stephanie Verdoia, who found the left corner to make it 1-0.
That was it until the second half, when, at 57:53, Ritzman picked up a rebound off the post and scored on an empty net to make it 2-0.
Four minutes later, the Broncs were trying to clear the ball out of the box, but the kick, meant to send the ball beyond the goal line, sent the ball into the goal. Verdoia was the closest player and received credit for the goal, making it 3-0.
The Redhawks completed the scoring when a Rosalie Sittauer corner kick found Sydney Carlson in front of the net.
Brianna Smallidge (10-4-1) played the first 76:32 in net for the Redhawks before Aris Coover came in to finish the shutout.
The Broncs hit the road for their final three matches of the regular season starting Friday at 9 p.m. at Bakersfield.
