Broncs Sweep WAC Player of the Week Honors
EDINBURG – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Monday that University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) women’s soccer freshman midfielder Hanna Spets is the WAC Offensive Player of the Week while freshman goalkeeper Aubrie Coley is the WAC Defensive Player of the Week for their efforts in the Broncs’ 3-1 win over New Mexico State in their first WAC match on Saturday.
It is Spets’ first honor, Coley’s third honor, and the Broncs’ fourth and fifth honors of the season.
Spets scored the game-winning goal when, with that match tied at 1-1 at the 64:35 mark, she grabbed a loose ball and sent it into the back of the net to put the Broncs up 2-1. Just over 11 minutes later, Spets added an insurance goal off a corner kick from freshman Frida Farstad-Eriksson. It was Spets’ first multi-goal match. She now has three goals.
In her first home start, Coley (4-1-3) recorded four saves on five shots while also coming out of the net to prevent would-be shots on multiple occasions. For the season, Coley has a 1.04 goals against average and an .845 save percentage.
At 7-1-3, the Broncs are tied with SMU (8-2-1 in 1986) for the third best record ever by a first-year NCAA Division I program in the State of Texas through 11 matches. The only teams better were Baylor (10-0-1 in 1996) and Abilene Christian (9-1-1 in 2013).
The Broncs are back in action on Friday at 1 p.m. when they visit Chicago State.
