Bucs seize late goal to top Patriots 1-0
CHARLESTON S.C. – For the second consecutive game, the Francis Marion University women's soccer team found themselves on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision. This time the loss came courtesy of the Charleston Southern University Buccaneers Wednesday evening at Buccaneer Field.
The scoreless tie was broken in the 78th minute, when a loose ball found the feet of the Bucs' Toni Lashley, who put it in unassisted past senior goalkeeper Lauren Vetock.
The Patriots (3-5-1) and Buccaneers (3-3-0) played the first half without any goals being put up on the scoreboard. FMU mustered up two shots in the first frame with one being on net, off the foot of sophomore forward Yasmin Bunter. The other shot from freshman forward Tyler King sailed high.
Francis Marion doubled their shot output in the second half with four. A shot in the 82nd minute from sophomore midfielder Casey Schifano was sent high over the goal, and Bunter's opportunity to send the match into overtime in the 88th minute was turned away by CSU keeper Amy Arroyo.
The Buccaneers held the advantage in shots 16-6, and both teams were even on corner kicks with four apiece.
Vetock made six saves compared to two for Arroyo.
The Patriots are back in action at home Sunday (Sept. 18) when Eastern Carolina University comes to town, kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
