Bulls Defeat Auburn with Last-Minute Goal
TAMPA, Aug. 22, 2019 – No.18/14 USF defeated Auburn, 2-1, Thursday night with a game-winning goal delivered by sophomore Sydny Nasello (Land O’ Lakes, Fla.) in the last twenty seconds of the game.
South Florida (1-0-0) took an early lead when all-time leading scorer Evelyne Viens (L’Ancienne-Lorette, Canada) scored her first goal of this season on a pass from Nasello (Land O’ Lakes, Fla.) in the fourth minute.
In the 34thminute, the Tigers (0-1-0) tied up the game with a goal from Jessie Gerow, assisted by Caroline Peterson. With the threat of overtime looming, Nasello sealed the victory for the Bulls in the 90thminute. Junior Sabrina Wagner worked the ball to the inside of the field, setting Nasello up to seal the game with a shot that sailed above the Auburn keeper.
Goalkeeper Sydney Martinez (Rincon, Ga.) earned her first win of the season, finishing the night with four saves. The Bulls defense limited the Tigers to eight shots, and just three in the first half, in comparison to USF’s 19 shots with 10 on frame.
