Bulls Open Home Schedule With Shutout Win
BUFFALO, NY - Fueled by a goal from Karen McMahon in the 44th minute, the Buffalo women's soccer team moved past Bucknell in the team's home opener at UB Stadium with a 1-0 victory.
The Bulls had numerous runs on offense that were stymied by a firm Bucknell defensive line, leading to 12 offsides penalties in the game. Many of the UB shots were well wide, but late in the first half the team was able to convert.Stephanie Velez made a run down the center of the field with McMahon trailing. Two Bucknell defenders converged on Velez, and she was able to squirt the ball out McMahon, who slid a shot past the Bucknell goalie for a momentum boost going into the half.
"Bucknell is a good team - they were co-champions of the Patriot League last season," said head coach Michael Thomas. "It was an entertaining game and the kids put together a true team effort to pull out the win tonight."
Sophomore goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon recorded her second straight shutout, making five saves and controlling pace on corner kicks and all play in the box. The game as a whole was bitterly close, with each team taking seven shots and only a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks for Bucknell.
Now 2-0, the team will hit the road in a mid-week game, taking on another Patriot League squad as Buffalo will face Colgate on Wednesday. Kick off is scheduled for 4 pm.
