Burnett sets career mark, NU falls to #6 BC
Sophomore keeper Paige Burnett (Placentia, Calif.) set a career high with 12 saves, but the Northeastern women's soccer team was unable to overcome a pair of late goals and fell at No. 6 Boston College, 2-0, on Wednesday night in Newton, Mass. Alexa Gaul made a pair of saves in net for the Eagles to secure the shutout.
BC held the edge throughout, outshooting the Huskies 22-4 and gaining and 11-1 advantage in corner kicks, but the contest was scoreless over its first 77 minutes. Junior Hanna Terry (Park City, Utah) led Northeastern with a pair of shots.
Burnett was tested early and often in net, but made big saves on Stephanie McCaffrey in the 7th minute and Victoria DiMartino in the 15th. Burnett was tested again twice at the end of the half, but made a sprawling diving stop on a wide-open Kristen Mewis before stopping a header to keep the contest scoreless.
The match remained tied heading into the second half. The Huskies withheld a strong offensive surge from the Eagles, as BC held a 12-3 edge in shots at the break. Burnett picked up six saves in the first frame, and sophomore Bianca Calderone (Wellesley, Mass.) and senior captain Greta Samuelsdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) picked up shots on goal for NU.
Northeastern had its first real chance of the second half fifteen minutes into the frame, but a strong corner serve-in by redshirt-junior Hannah O'Donnell (Dallas, Texas) was unable to generate a shot on goal. Five minutes later Terry had another chance as she launched a long shot that skipped inches wide of the back corner of the BC net.
BC's Jana Jaffrey nearly got the Eagles on the board in the 65th minute, but Burnett was able to haul in her strike for her ninth save, tying her career-best.
The Eagles were finally able to break the scoreless draw in the 77th minute, when Mewis extended her scoring streak to six games, putting a header past Burnett off an assist from Gibby Wagner.
BC tacked onto its lead in the 84th minute, with McKenzie Meehan one-timing a strike past Burnett off a cross from McCaffrey. The Huskies were unable to muster another chance, and the Eagles 2-0 lead held.
Northeastern is now 1-4-0 on the year, and the Eagles move to 5-0-1. BC's all-time record against NU now stands at 0-8-1.
The Huskies return home on Sunday for the first in a five-game home stand. The first test in the stand will be the Dayton Flyers of the Atlantic-10 conference. Game time is set for 1 p.m. Fans who cannot make it out to Parsons Field can catch all the action at GoNU.com/xstream.
