Texas forward Trinity Byars became the first college player to sign directly to an NWSL side this week, joining the San Diego Wave on a three-year deal. Earlier in the year, the NWSL announced the elminatin of the draft, allowing players more choice about where to begin the future.

Byars signed with the Wave after suffering a season-ending knee injury on September 1 against Central Michigan. It marked the end of a stellar career in Austin, scoring 52 goals in 71 games, to go with 36 assists.

"We are thrilled to welcome Trinity to the San Diego Wave," Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton said in a statement. “Trinity has proven to be one of the most dynamic and exciting forwards at the collegiate level. Her ability to play between the lines and threaten in behind is special and we believe she will be an incredible addition to our team.”

Byars has ample experience with the U.S. youth setup spanning Under-14 through Under-23 age groups. She competed at the Under-20 World Cup in 2022 as well.

Prior to playing at Texas(w), Byars was a standout with Solar SC in the Girls Development Academy and ECNL. She was the No. 1 ranked player in the final edition of the 2021 IMG Academy Club Soccer Player Rankings.
