Cal Blanks Vermont, 3-0, in Stanford Nike Classic on Friday
STANFORD, Calif. – Three Golden Bears scored for California and goalkeeper Kevin Peach made 10 saves in the first action of his Cal career in a 3-0 shutout of Vermont on Friday in the Stanford Nike Classic at Cagan Stadium. The Bears improved their record to 3-2-2 after the nonconference victory, while the Catamounts' record fell to 5-2-0.
Michael Munoz, Tony Salciccia and Michael Shaddock posted second-half goals to propel Cal to the win, while Peach shut out Vermont despite 26 shots for the Catamounts.
“It was a good team performance in some difficult heat today,” Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said.
After a scoreless first half, Munoz headed in his second goal of the season to make the score 1-0 at 54:43. Freshman midfielder Seth Casiple produced his team-leading fifth assist to set up the junior forward.
Vermont fouled Casiple in the Cal box to give the Bears their first penalty kick of the season. Salciccia, a junior midfielder and co-captain, converted the spot kick to give the Bears a 2-0 lead at 63:08.
Another first capped the scoring for the Bears. Junior defender Chris Ortega played a long ball over the defense to Shaddock. The sophomore forward beat goalkeeper David Ramada on a 1v1 and scored his first goal as a Bear to make the score 3-0 at 74:12.
Down the stretch, Peach made three saves as Vermont took eight more shots.
Ramada did not make any saves on the Bears’ 10 shots.
Cal, the 2010 Pac-10 Conference champion, opens the inaugural Pac-12 season when it travels to play at UCLA on Sept. 30 and at San Diego State on Oct. 2.
