FULLERTON – Junior forward David Zamora’s game-winning header in the 95th minute propelled the Cal Poly men’s soccer team to its first road victory of the season, as the Mustangs posted 1-0, overtime decision against Cal State Fullerton in the opening Big West Conference match for both programs Wednesday evening at Titan Stadium.

Cal Poly junior midfielder Junior Burgos sliced a cross from the right side of play toward the far post, where Mustang sophomore center back Patrick Sigler headed the ball back toward Zamora at the near post. The Costa Rica native beat Titans goalkeeper Trevor Whiddon with ease to provide the Mustangs (3-6-0, 1-0-0) with three conference road points and Cal Poly its first away win in six attempts this season. Overall, the decision was Cal Poly’s fifth-straight victory against Cal State Fullerton (4-4-1, 0-1-0) and third-consecutive shutout of the Titans.

The Mustangs, reduced to 10 players following junior defender Daniel Gray’s 81st-minute red card, had a chance to win the match earlier as Zamora hit the crossbar 90 seconds into overtime. Burgos, who paced Cal Poly with six shots, collected the rebound, but missed his attempt on an open net.

Cal Poly recorded a season-high 21 shot attempts, compared to Cal State Fullerton’s 13.

Mustangs junior goalkeeper Patrick McLain made five saves to record his first clean sheet of the season.

Cal Poly returns to Alex G. Spanos Stadium to host UC Davis on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m.
