Post-Match Interview with Michelle Calmeyn
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Fueled by Michelle Calmeyn’s (Elk Grove, Ill.) hat trick, the USC Upstate women’s soccer team downed Alabama State, 6-0, Sunday afternoon at County University Soccer Stadium.
Upstate (1-5-1) struck first as Kayli Moore (Severna Park, Md.) sent her corner kick into the box and Katelyn Allen (Geneva, Ill.) put her header in the back of the net, giving the Spartans a 1-0 advantage in the 27th-minute.
“We played a full 90 minutes of soccer today and I am proud of our team’s effort,” said head coach Renee Lopez. “We had four different players pick up their first collegiate goals and it was a total team effort, the one we have been looking for all season. This is a building block for us as we prepare for next weekend’s matches at Georgia Southern and Presbyterian College.”
The Spartans went ahead 2-0 when Calmeyn took a pass from Katrina Spinner-Wilson (Richmond, Va.) and scored from the top of the box. Calmeyn’s first goal of 2011 allowed Upstate to carry a two-goal lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, the Spartans exploded for four goals, two of which came off of Calmeyn’s foot. Brianne Marcell (Simpsonville, S.C.), logging her first minutes of the season, scored in the 56th-minute to put Upstate in front 3-0. Marcell was assisted on her first collegiate goal by Katrina Savoy (Waldorf, Md.).
Calmeyn scored her second and third goals of the contest in a span of just 1:59 as the Spartans increased their lead to 5-0. Calmeyn scored in the 64th- and 66th-minutes to record the first hat trick for the Spartans of the Division I era and just the third hat trick in program history. Stefany Saura (Raleigh, N.C.) recorded an assist on Calmeyn’s goal at the 63:06 mark.
The other two hat tricks in school-history were by Thea Moen. Moen notched a hat trick against Mars Hill on Sept. 8, 2001 and scored four times against Clayton State on Oct. 23, 2001.
Upstate tacked on its sixth and final goal of the contest when Savoy scored from inside the box on a pass from Spinner-Wilson, her second assist of the match.
Sarah Plantz (Cartersville, Ga.) earned the win and made one save in the first 45 minutes of the match. Rachel Collins (Raleigh, N.C.) played the second half and tallied three saves. ASU (1-6-0) goalie Maressa Gordon recorded six saves on Sunday.
Upstate led the way in shots (16-9), shots on-goal (12-4) and corners (11-2). The Spartans committed eight fouls and were called offsides seven times, while the Lady Hornets had four falls and three offsides penalties.
The Spartans will hit the road for its next three matches, beginning with a match at Georgia Southern on Sept. 16th. Kickoff in Statesboro, Ga., is slated for 4 p.m.
