Canisius Downs Undermanned Saints

Asani Samuels scored in the 106^th minute of double overtime as Canisius beat undermanned Siena Soccer 2-1 in Buffalo. Senior captain James Beeston assisted on the Saints’ goal, breaking Paul Laniewski’s ’87 program record with his 26^th career assist.

Matt Needham had tied the match with just 1:16 remaining in regulation for the Saints (5-6, 1-2) which played the final 50 minutes down a man. Siena was whistled for 17 fouls and assessed four cards in the match.

Canisius (6-4-2, 2-1-1) took advantage with Will Hudson converting a penalty kick in the 65^th minute. But despite being down a man and playing from a goal behind, the Saints were relentless in their pursuit of coming back.

In the final 21 minutes of regulation the Saints peppered the Canisius goal with eight shots. Four were on target and another deflected off the crossbar. Eventually the hard work paid off as Beeston’s entry was headed in by Needham for his third goal of the season in the penultimate minute of regulation.

Siena kept the pressure on during the overtime sessions and had the majority of opportunities but couldn’t break though. Canisius’ Ryan Arvin made all six of his saves during the last 37 minutes of the match including three during the overtime periods.

On a rare Canisius opportunity, Andrew Incho set up Samuels for the golden goal from 15 yards out.

Siena out-shot Canisius 19-15 and held a 6-3 edge in corners. Adam Myers made a career-high six saves for the Saints.

The Saints will look to bounce back Saturday when they host Iona for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Siena Turf Field.
