Canisius Shuts Out Youngstown State
The Canisius College women’s soccer team notched its first win of the 2013 campaign on Sunday, in the form of a 1-0 win over Youngstown State (1-1-0) at the Demske Sports Complex. The win improves Canisius to 1-1-0 in 2013.
Senior midfielder Kelly McMahon scored the game’s lone goal off a set piece in the 18th minute. After Youngstown State was whistled for a foul, McMahon took a free kick from 20 yards out when she caught the Penguins’ defense off guard by quickly gathering the ball and sending her shot into the lower right corner.
“It was something we just covered in practice yesterday,” said head coach Jim Wendling. “I said anything on a free kick by the goal, just put it down and shoot, and [McMahon] made a great decision.”
The goal was McMahon’s second in as many games, which supersedes her career total after scoring just once in 39 career games prior to Friday’s season opener at Cleveland State.
“I’m playing an attacking midfield a lot this year,” McMahon said. “It’s almost like I’m a third forward, so I’ve been able to get in the box a lot more.”
Canisius managed to outshoot its opponent for the second straight contest, recording 17 shots against the Penguins’ 10. The Griffs put seven of their 17 shots on net.
Senior goalkeeper Megan Tock recorded her fourth career shutout, stopping all five shots she faced.
Next up for the Griffs is local rival St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, Aug. 28. Kickoff at the Demske Sports Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: This was the Griffs’ 13th meeting with Youngstown State, with Canisius leading the series 8-4-1… The win avenged a 4-0 Canisius loss at Youngstown State in 2012… This marked the first time the Griffs have shut their opponent out since Sept. 14, 2012, when they defeated Duquesne 2-0… Youngstown State’s 10 shots are the fewest allowed by Canisius since a 3-2 win over Saint Peter’s on Oct. 12, 2012.
